The ideal preparation is to remove the hair above the skin, not the hair inside the follicle. Shaving limits epidermal heating while preserving the follicular target; waxing does the opposite by removing the target the laser needs.

Why Hair Preparation Affects Laser Performance

The follicle needs an intact target

Laser epilation relies on selective photothermolysis. Melanin in the hair shaft absorbs the laser wavelength and converts the light into heat, which is conducted toward the follicular structures responsible for hair growth.

The hair does not need to be long above the skin for this process to work. The critical target is the hair and melanin remaining within the follicle.

Excess surface hair increases burn risk

If the hair protrudes substantially above the skin, it can absorb laser energy at the surface rather than allowing efficient delivery toward the follicle.

This can cause surface heating, an unpleasant smoke or burnt-hair odor, epidermal burns, and less effective follicular treatment.

The practical target is very short stubble

Patients should usually shave the area one to three days before the appointment, or follow the clinic’s device-specific instructions. The goal is hair that is short enough not to protrude more than roughly 1 mm from the skin.

Any loose cut hairs should be removed before treatment. Clinics should also treat only intact, non-irritated skin.

Why Waxing Is Counterproductive

Waxing removes the laser’s chromophore

Waxing extracts the hair shaft from the follicle, along with the portion containing the melanin that normally absorbs the laser energy.

With little or no target hair remaining, the laser cannot heat the follicle efficiently. The session may therefore produce substantially less reduction than expected.

The problem is temporary, but clinically important

Avoid tanning and recent intense sun exposure

Shaving too early or too late can be inconvenient

Shaving several days before treatment may leave visible stubble, while shaving immediately before treatment can irritate sensitive skin or cause microscopic cuts.

The safest timing depends on the patient’s skin response and the laser system. The clinic’s written instruction should take priority, provided it maintains the core principle: short surface hair with an intact follicular target.

Depilatory creams are not automatically equivalent to shaving

Depilatory creams generally remove hair at or near the surface rather than extracting the follicle, but they can irritate or chemically burn the skin.

More laser energy does not compensate for poor preparation
